Ready-To-Vote Checklist

Use our handy checklist to help everyone you know make a plan to vote.

✅ Step 1: Confirm your voter registration

  • Go to the Texas Secretary of State's Am I Registered? tool.
  • On the right side, pull down the "Selection Criteria" menu and choose whether to look yourself up by your Texas Driver License number (TDL) or by your name and county.
  • Once you enter and submit your information, confirm that your registration status shows ACTIVE and that the address is correct and current.
  • If it's not active, correct or current, don't wait -- submit or update your registration right away!
  • To start online, use the voter registration tool on the League's Vote411 website. You'll be mailed a form that you can then sign and submit.
  • Or contact our Voter Services coordinator and one of our Volunteer Deputy Registrars will help you get registered in your county.

✅ Step 2: Have your ID ready to vote

✅ Step 3: Make a plan to vote -- in person or by mail

  • First, determine if you are eligible to vote by mail.
  • If you are eligible and wish to vote by mail, start the vote-by-mail steps by requesting your ballot as soon as possible.
  • If you will be voting in person, make a plan and put it on your calendar. Vote early if at all possible.

✅ Step 4: Research your choices before you vote

  • Use Vote411 to look up your address, see the races that will be on your ballot, and find nonpartisan information about the candidates and proposals you'll be voting on.
  • If you prefer a printed guide, find the League of Women Voters' Nonpartisan Voter Guides at public libraries and other locations around our area. If you have trouble finding a copy, you may download a printable guide from our website, or request a printed guide from our voter services coordinator.
  • Attend or view candidate forums or debates hosted by the League of Women Voters, or by other public-service organizations in our area, leading up to the election.

✅ Step 5: Ask for help, know your rights, report problems

  • See our Voting Rights & Protections section for more information on:
  • Help for voters with disabilities, language needs, or other special needs for assistance
  • Information on protections for voters and hotlines to report problems
